Seen by few visitors until recently, the monastic complex of Alchi nestled in a beautiful valley in the Ladakh Himalayas, has miraculously preserved Buddhist wall paintings of unmatched splendor. Though less well-known than the famous murals at Ajanta or Dunhuang, the Alchi paintings are no less exciting. Not only are they important for the history of Tibetan culture, which is predominant in the region, but they are of great significance for the history of Kashmiri art as well This book is the first major ttempt to reproduce in sumptuous color plates the brilliant world of form and color created by unknown Kashmiri and Tibetan artists between the 11th and 13th centuries. |
