Ladakh for tourists and Ladakh for trekkers and climbers are two different worlds. It concentrates most valuably on the wealth of extremely rewarding summits, unknown passes and remote valley, which have been hitherto neglected due to lack of information or difficulty of access.
Complete with several maps, sketches, photographs, tables of road distances and trek routes, this book is an exhaustive reference work on this area. The author's experience in Ladakh takes one to transformation of this region from an ancient civilisation to a tourist destination. The book will be essential reference for all travellers, trekkers, mountaineers and historians or as a simple arm-chair travelogue.

Harish Kapadia began climbing and trekking in the range aroung Bombay, the Western Ghats. His first visit to the Himalaya was almosr 35 years ago. He has never looked back since, still trekking and climbing actively. His main contribution to Himalayan climbing has been to explore unknown areas and, in a number of cases, to open up climbing possibilities. Some of his major ascents have been of Devtoli (6788 m), Bandarpunch West (6102 m), Parilungbi (6166 m), and Lungser Kangri (6666 m). He has led five international joint expeditions, four with the British and one with the French.
Harish has a degree in Commerce, Law and Management from Bobbay University. He has published nine books. His books Exploring the Hidden Himalaya (with Soli Mehta), High Himalaya Unknown Valleys and Meeting the Mountains cover his various trips to the Himalaya, climbing and trekking in different regions. He is the editor of the prestigious Himalayan Journal for the past 20 years.
He was awarded the IMF Gold Medal by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation in 1993. Harish was invited to many countries to lecture on his Himalayan exploits. He is Vice-President of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation and lives in Mumbai. |

Harish Kapadia ha dato un contributo unico alla nostra conoscenza dell'Himalaya: come curatore di The Himalayan Journal, una delle più autorevoli e complete registrazioni delle attività esplorative nell'Himalaya; attraverso i suoi numerosi libri e come leader e organizzatore di innumerevoli spedizioni nel corso degli anni. La sua profonda conoscenza, i resoconti dei suoi viaggi e le esperienze personali raccontate in numerosi libri e articoli costituiscono una preziosa fonte di informazioni sulla regione. Da ragazzo, Harish cominciò ad arrampicarsi e fare trekking sulle colline attorno a Mumbai. La sua prima visita sull'Himalaya risale a quasi sessant'anni fa e da allora non si è mai voltato indietro, continuando a dedicarsi attivamente al trekking e all'arrampicata. Ha scalato più di 30 vette himalayane, molte delle quali in prima ascesa, e ha attraversato più di 140 passi himalayani per esplorare diverse valli. Continuò a coltivare la sua passione nonostante i gravi infortuni personali e le perdite subite. Subì un duro colpo in famiglia quando il suo giovane figlio, il tenente Nawang Kapadia, cadde sotto i colpi di arma da fuoco mentre combatteva contro i terroristi nel Kashmir. Dal 1997 al 1999 è stato vicepresidente dell'Indian Mountaineering Foundation e nel 1993 gli è stata conferita la medaglia d'oro dell'IMF e il Tensing Norgay Award, il più alto riconoscimento per l'avventura in India.
